Deaf Boy With A 'Bionic Ear'

VIDEO: 'Bionic ear' Deaf boy hear his family for the first time goes viral.

CNN - In many ways, Caiden Moran is an average five-year-old boy. Running around his front yard, climbing trees and playing with his brother, the only difference you might notice is the small device on the side of his head.

"Caiden was born, and before we left the hospital we did the newborn hearing screening. And he had failed, so we came back a week later, did the test again, failed again," said his mother Danielle Moran.

Caiden was born profoundly Deaf, with no cochleas an inner part of the ear that converts sound to nerve impulses and sends them to the brain. At the time doctors confirmed baby Caiden was deaf his father Tommy a member of the U.S. Navy had been deployed to Hawaii.

"I was sad," he said. "I didn't know anybody who was deaf, I didn't know sign language, I didn't know how to be a good dad and raise a Deaf child."

Because Caiden had no cochleas, a cochlear implant would be of no help. Instead, his parents learned sign language, assuming it would be the only way their son could ever communicate. Then, by chance, Danielle heard about a potential solution an auditory brainstem implant (ABI).

An ABI consists of a microphone and transmitter on the head, which convert sounds from the outside world into electrical signals. Those signals are transmitted to an internal receiver made up of electrodes, implanted on the brainstem. The auditory neurons are stimulated directly in the brain, bypassing the inner ear completely... Read more: http://cnn.com/2015/08/17/health/bionic-ear-auditory-brainstem-implant/index.html

Tianjin Explosion and Aftermath Video Compilation

RAW VIDEO: Explosion in Tianjin, China 12/08/2015 - Dozens Dead, Areas of Chinese Port City Devastated.

CNN TIANJIN, CHINA - You can see the devastation everywhere: in the hollowed-out shells of buildings, in the anguished faces of relatives, in the parade of scorched cars.

But what set off the terrifying explosions that ripped through warehouses containing hazardous chemical materials, shooting fireballs across the sky and shaking buildings more than 2 miles away?

Hours later, amid the destruction in this northern Chinese port city of more than 13 million people, the cause of Wednesday night's blast remained unclear.

A chemical odor hung in the air Thursday. Fires still burned in the thinly populated waterfront industrial district where the explosions went off. And the grim toll kept mounting.

Tianjin Explosion From Car Dash Cam - The massive explosion in Tianjin was caught on camera from a car's dash cam, showing both explosions. You can see the shockwave from the first explosion and then people running away followed by a much larger shockwave from the second explosion just seconds later.

Among the 50 confirmed dead are 17 firefighters, officials said Thursday. More than 700 people have been treated in hospitals, 71 in critical condition, the state-run Xinhua news outlet said. Dozens of people are reported to still be missing.

Authorities said more than 200 chemical specialists from the military had been sent in with detection devices. More than 1,000 firefighters have been trying to deal with the remaining fires.

Tianjin Explosion Aftermath Drone Footage - Aerial footage found online shows a port area that was hit hard by two massive explosions in north China's city of Tianjin late Wednesday night.

The explosions originated at a warehouse site owned by Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co., a company that stores and transports dangerous chemicals. Firefighters had reportedly been called to the area to tackle a blaze before the first blast went off.

Tianjin Explosion Aftermath Raw Footage - Nearby Highway, a petrol station at the Binhai New Development Zone is believed to be behind the cause of the fiery blast, roughly 90 miles southeast of Beijing. At the time of the explosion the ground was shaking fiercely, nearby cars and buildings were shaking, a few buildings' glass all broke and everyone started to run.

Company executives have been taken into custody, state media said. The blasts' destructive force tore into Tianjin, smashing buildings and mangling shipping containers.

The first explosion was huge, and the second was even more powerful: the equivalent of 21 metric tons of TNT or a magnitude-2.9 earthquake, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center... Read More: http://cnn.com/2015/08/13/asia/china-tianjin-explosions
