Deaf Taylor Swift 'Scream Queens' TV Series

VIDEO [CC] - 'Scream Queens' Whitney Meyer on how she landed the role of Deaf Taylor Swift.

Design&Trend - Whitney Meyer was "psyched" to be part of "Scream Queens" despite her short stint on the show.

The 20-year-old newcomer played Tiffany, a.k.a. Deaf Taylor Swift, on the Fox comedy-horror series. But during a recent FaceTime session with Cosmopolitan, Meyer revealed that she actually auditioned for the role by singing one of Lorde's hit songs.

To activate this feature, press the "CC" button.

"I sent [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] a taped audition. My mom and I, we blocked the scene with the breakdowns that were sent to me. They saw my tape and apparently they loved it. I got an email and they wanted to fly me out for the shoot so I could play Tiffany. It was unexpected," the actress and figure skater said.

"In my audition tape, I was singing Lorde's song "Royals," so it was different," she added. "I was supposed to have brown hair. I guess they changed it."

When asked if her character was originally supposed to be Lorde fan, she said, "Yeah. Maybe. That's what it appeared to be."

Despite the sudden changes, Meyer was totally fine playing Swift instead. "I was psyched. When I got the [actual] script I was like, 'Oh my god! I'm Taylor Swift now," ... Read more: http://www.designntrend.com/articles/scream-queens-whitney-meyer-deaf-taylor-swift.htm

Fapping Guy Calls Deaf Video Service 4,000 Times

Deaf News: Guy calls Deaf video service 4,000 times - Allegedly got naked, masturbated in front of ZVRS employees.

NEW YORK POST - A Brooklyn man is using a video calling service for the Deaf to reach out and touch himself, the company providing the service alleges in a lawsuit.

David Marcano is one of the most fervent users of software offered by a Florida company, ZVRS, which gets federal money every time a hearing-disabled person uses its product to place a call, the company claims.

The software allows the Deaf to call one of ZVRS’s sign language interpreters via video chat. The interpreters act as operators, placing calls to third parties on behalf of the Deaf person and then translating the call.

But Marcano, 51, isn’t Deaf, and his calls don’t need any translating, the company says in Brooklyn federal court papers.

Marcano has made 4,646 calls to ZVRS since Jan. 1 “for the sole purpose of masturbating in view of ZVRS’s employees,” the business says.

“In every call made through ZVRS’s software platform, Marcano appears on the video call for the purpose of exposing his genitals or masturbating to ZVRS’s female staff,” according to the suit which seeks unspecified damages.

As soon as ZVRS cancels Marcano’s account, he uses false information to create a new one, they gripe. He’s called from eight different numbers, and contacted them as recently as Sept. 21, the company charges.

He has signed up for new ZVRS accounts under the names “Davey Mareno,” “Davey Mar,” “Dave Maccan,” “Dave Mard” and “Dave Macan,” among others.

The calls have cost the company productivity and business and left ZVRS’s employees with emotional distress, the firm claims.

ZVRS also is seeking an injunction against Marcano to stop his hands-on use of their service, accusing him of fraud and breach of contract because he signed up for software he doesn’t need.

Marcano didn’t respond to messages sent to each of the 24 e-mail addresses ZVRS says he used to create the fake accounts. SOURCE

Helen Keller's Beloved Climbing Tree Cut Down

Deaf News: Cut down a popular 200-year-old oak tree at the Alabama childhood home of Helen Keller.

TUSCUMBIA - Section by section, the sprawling water oak plummeted Monday onto the grounds of Ivy Green at the hands of a whirring chainsaw.

Sue Pilkilton, executive director of Ivy Green, the birthplace of Helen Keller, watched the tree’s presence in the front yard dwindle.

“Isn’t that the saddest thing?” Pilkilton lamented. “We have tried for years to save that tree.”

Having stood for more than 200 years, the tree had particular significance in Keller’s young life. She enjoyed climbing it as a child, and once became stranded there in the midst of a storm until her teacher, Anne Sullivan, came to her rescue, Pilkilton said.

“Miss Sullivan had to climb up there and get her,” she said.

Members of the board that oversees the historic tourist attraction had no alternative but to order the tree removed. A look inside its trunk revealed why. It was hollowed from years of decay and insect infestation.

In July, part of the tree fell during a storm that packed an EF1 tornado... Read more: http://timesdaily.com/news/local/historic-keller-oak-taken-down/article.html

FromTheGrapevine - Find out why a video messaging startup has joined the ranks of Microsoft and Google.

We've all heard the hit song "Let it Go" from the Disney movie "Frozen" enough times to, well, let it go. So when film director Jules Dameron decided to make her own music video of the now ubiquitous song, the bar was set high for coming up with a unique rendition.

So how was Dameron's music video different? It was sung in American Sign Language, and used an entirely Deaf cast and crew.

And for Dameron, who herself is Deaf, communicating with that many people on set was made simpler thanks to a video messaging app called Glide.

"I instantly fell in love with it," the Hollywood-based director told From The Grapevine. "For once, I felt like I could function, and fully express myself through communications with everyone that I used sign language with. I just adored the fact I didn't have to rely on English text anymore.

American Sign Language is a completely different language with its own set of grammar, rules and structure, and for me to discover a social medium to express just that, as opposed to English, meant the world to me."... Read more: http://www.fromthegrapevine.com/innovation/glide-deaf-app

Deaf Man Jailed Without Interpreter, Wins Case

Deaf News: Deaf man jailed without sign language translator wins case against District of Columbia jail.

WASHINGTON - A Deaf man who was jailed for 51 days without a sign language translator - left unable to communicate with prison doctors, his counselor, his teachers and other inmates - has won a discrimination case against the District of Columbia.

William Pierce is profoundly Deaf and communicates with sign language. After he pleaded guilty to a simple assault charge stemming from a domestic dispute, he was sentenced to the D.C. Correctional Treatment Facility, which is operated by Corrections Corporation of America.

The jail assumed that "lip-reading and exchanging written notes would suffice," and did not provide a translator, the court found.

"They figuratively shrugged and effectively sat on their hands," the court's decision read. Pierce felt isolated and confused by what was happening in jail, he said in court filings.

The court found that the District and CCA had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.

“I am very pleased with Judge Jackson’s decision to find that the District of Columbia violated my rights as a Deaf man and a human being,” Pierce said, through an interpreter, in an American Civil Liberties Union press release.

Video phones and interpreters are critical for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing inmates to have access to the same opportunities as other inmates," Pierce said. "Unfortunately, even with this decision, the denial of service and adequate access continues... Cochlear Controversy Dramatized In ‘Sound’

Deaf News: The world-premiere play “Sound” explores the controversy over cochlear implants for the Deaf.

SEATTLE TIMES - To hear? To speak? To sign? Those are the questions.

Deaf children in America are eligible for a procedure that can significantly expand their ability to hear. It is a cochlear implant, and rather than amplify sounds like hearing aids do, it works by directly stimulating the auditory nerve in the brain.

By 2012, about 96,000 adults and children in the U.S. alone had undergone the procedure.

Yet while many have hailed it as a breakthrough that not only can turn up the volume but also help Deaf children develop speech, not everyone is cheering.

“There are a lot of emotional feelings about CIs (cochlear implants) in the Deaf community,” explained Howie Seago, a Deaf Tacoma-bred theater artist and co-director of the new play “Sound,” which debuts this week at ACT Theatre.

“Many Deaf people feel that the doctors and other ‘professionals’ in the field of deafness consider us ‘defective’ and need to be fixed,” Seago commented by email.

“They stress this ad nauseam to the parents and do not fully educate them as to the range of communications options available. They almost always leave out the benefits of using sign language with their Deaf child.”

The conflict over whether children in particular need the device intrigued Seago’s co-director, Desdemona Chiang, when she read an early draft of hearing playwright Don Nguyen’s drama, “Sound.” It portrays the heated dispute between a Deaf father and his non-Deaf ex-wife over whether to try to restore their daughter’s hearing with CIs... Acknowledging the existence of Deaf Lives does not make other life experiences invalid. It is crucial to understand the movement of specific minority groups and how their individual experiences reflect human existence.

Deaf Backpackers Travel - Deafying Stereotypes

Deaf News: How can you survive in this world if you don’t know how to communicate or drive? Deaf people can do anything, except hear!

Two Scots Abroad - These are the most common questions we get asked throughout our lives. So, you can imagine how people react initially when they find out that we wanted to travel.

“Isn’t it too dangerous for you to travel?” Our parents’ utmost fears. They feared that since we aren’t capable of hearing certain surroundings, that there may be a risk to our lives. For instance, they feared that we wouldn’t be able to hear oncoming speeding cars.

The truth is: Deaf people can do anything, except hear. What people tend to forget or may not realise is that although we cannot hear, our other senses are heightened. We naturally developed other senses more strongly - in particular, our vision. We develop skills such as reading lips, facial expressions and body language.

However, we put off travel for a long time because of the fears that society and the media instil into our conscious. One day, we both decided to face that challenge and prove to others that Deaf people are capable of travel. Thus, our blog, Deafinitely Wanderlust, was born.

Through our adventure, we conquered not only the language barriers but communication barriers as well. In comparison to Hearing people, we naturally picked up their local gestures faster because our voices are our hands. We can also distinguish through body language when locals are nervous, annoyed or even lying... See more with photos: http://twoscotsabroad.com/deafying-stereotypes-deaf-travel
