VIDEO: Deaf News - Deaf pair accused of murder unfit to stand trial due to mental impairment, Australian Supreme Court told.
MELBOURNE -- Psychiatrists have found two of three Deaf people accused of murdering a profoundly Deaf man, who fell 12 metres from an apartment balcony, unfit to stand trial due to mental impairment.
Crown prosecutor Sharn Coombes told the Supreme Court on Monday that Georgia Fields, 19, and Jake Fairest, 26, who are on bail, had been assessed and found to be unfit to stand trial. A third man, Warwick Toohey, 37, who appeared via video link from prison, needed further assessment.
Justice Lex Lasry reserved any decision as to whether the trio's trial would proceed until next year.
A trial date had been set down for May 2, but Justice Lasry adjourned the case to February 8, when a directions hearing will be held to get an update on the fitness to plead question for the trio.
Ms Fields, Mr Toohey and Mr Fairest are charged with murdering Robbie Wright, who fell from a balcony outside his Ringwood apartment on January 15. Mr Wright, 36, who also suffered from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and had an intellectual disability, died in hospital three days later.
Ms Fields is profoundly Deaf and can communicate only by sign language and in writing.
Mr Fairest has severe cognitive and developmental disabilities caused by aggressive chemotherapy treatment to a brain tumour when he was seven. The treatment also caused stunted growth, a weakened spine and a growth hormone deficiency.
Previous court hearings have been told Mr Wright and Mr Toohey lived together but were constantly arguing over household tasks. Both men had allegedly previously "shared" Ms Fields as a girlfriend.
The trio allegedly confronted Mr Wright in his lounge room, restrained him and forced him out on to the balcony and over the hand rail... Read More: http://theage.com.au/victoria/accused-deaf-killers-unfit-to-stand-trial-court-told

Paris Terror Attacks: 120 Dead, 8 Attackers Killed
VIDEO [CC] - Exclusive: Paris terror attacks, at least 153 killed in gunfire and blasts, French officials say in Paris.
CNN PARIS - On a night when thousands of Paris residents and tourists were reveling and fans were enjoying a soccer match between France and world champion Germany, horror struck in an unprecedented manner.
Terrorists - some with AK 47s, some reportedly with bombs strapped to them - attacked sites throughout the French capital and at the stadium where the soccer match was underway.
Scores were killed in the coordinated attacks late Friday, leaving a nation in mourning and the world in shock. CNN will update this story as information comes in: [Latest developments, posted at 11:59 p.m. ET]
• Paris Prosecutor spokeswoman Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre said eight extremists are dead after attacks. Seven of them were killed in suicide bombings.
• U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with French President Francois Hollande to offer condolences and assistance in the investigation, the White House said. Earlier, Obama said, "This is an attack not just on Paris, not just on the people on France, but an attack on all humanity and the universal values we share." He called the attacks an "outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians."
• A total of six locations were attacked in and just outside the capital, Paris prosecutor François Molins told reporters Saturday.
“Paris has been hit again by terror tonight,” Deputy Mayor Patrick Klugman said on Twitter.
• Five suspected attackers have been "neutralized," said Molins. It was unclear whether that term meant the terrorists were dead.
• A witness tells Radio France that attackers inside the Bataclan concert hall entered firing rifles and shouting "Allah akbar."
• At least 153 people were killed in the Paris and Saint-Denis shootings and bombings, French officials said. Saint-Denis is home to the national stadium where the soccer match was being played.
• The worst carnage occurred at Bataclan, with at least 112 left dead. A journalist who was at a rock concert there escaped and told CNN: "We lied down on the floor not to get hurt. It was a huge panic.
The terrorists shot at us for 10 to 15 minutes. It was a bloodbath." Julien Pearce didn't hear the attackers speak, but he said one friend who escaped heard them talk about Iraq and Syria. Later, he said the men were speaking French. Two men dressed in black started shooting and after wounded people fell to the floor, the gunmen shot them again, execution-style, he said ... Canadian 'Deaf Superintendent Now' Petition
Deaf News - Exclusive: Canadian protesters say Deaf students’ new superintendent who can hear must go - but not everyone agrees.
TORONTO STAR - A loud campaign advocating for a Deaf Superintendent circulated online and around the world, then didn’t get what it was fighting for.
The Provincial Schools Branch (PSB), which oversees the provinces four schools for the Deaf, announced last week it hired a hearing superintendent, Jeanne Leonard.
The announcement also said the branch hired Heather Gibson, who is Deaf, in a new position called “assistant to the superintendents.” Though that brings a Deaf person to an administrative level previously dominated by hearing people, some in the Deaf community say that’s not what they were asking for.
“It totally doesn’t make sense - there are qualified Deaf candidates,” Rose Etheridge, said through an interpreter at a protest Monday in front of the Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. “They’re trying to pacify us,” added Etheridge, whose Oct. 22 video calling for a Deaf Superintendent has hit 20,000 views. (The hashtag #PSBsuperintendent2015 followed the video and generated hundreds of posts from across the continent.)
However, two of the community’s most outspoken advocates - Barbara Dodd and Zak Smith, who was arrested last year for staging a protest over concerns about learning conditions in Ontario’s Schools for the Deaf - say they are satisfied with the appointments as a first step toward more Deaf leadership ... Petitioning Deaf Superintendent Now:
We are protesting against PSB's decision to appoint a hearing person to superintendent position because we are a cultural and linguistic minority group who should be led by our own. We are also protesting for changes in their superintendent selection process, to ensure that it will be transparent, fair and inclusive. Sign up petition HERE.

Growing Deaf-Owned Businesses In Austin
VIDEO: Deaf News - Austin, Texas A Top City For Deaf-Owned Businesses.
KXAN AUSTIN - The number of Deaf-owned businesses in the country is growing, and Austin is leading the pack.
Convo, a Deaf-owned telecommunications provider, reports there are more than 200 Deaf-owned businesses in the country, and counting. In the Austin-area there are 30 Deaf-owned businesses.
One of them is Silent Automotive, an auto shop that provides services to both Deaf and Hearing customers. The owners pride themselves on integrity, honesty and quality of service.
“Sound is caused by vibrations, sound doesn’t come out of its own. So we go to the car and feel the vibrations,” said part-owner, Joel DeChristofaro. “We have to be hands on and find exactly where the sound is coming from. Does take a little more time I assume, but I feel it gives us a clearer picture of what happens with the car.” Danny Blalock first started the business back in 2008.
“Because of communication. A lot of my [Deaf] friends have had bad experiences at auto shops, they felt they were getting ripped off,” said Blalock. “Our goal for our business is to keep growing; we’d like to hire more mechanics, Deaf mechanics, to give them opportunity to grow their resume.”
Blalock says the Deaf community continues to grow in Austin, Texas and is becoming more friendly for the Deaf community. Source

Deaf Driver Found Guilty In 'Zombie Walk' Crash
VIDEO [CC] - Exclusive News: Deaf driver Matthew Pocci convicted of reckless driving 'Zombie Walk' crash in San Diego.
KGTV SAN DIEGO - A Deaf motorist who drove through a group of spectators watching the "Zombie Walk" parade in San Diego, seriously injuring one woman, was convicted Wednesday of felony reckless driving.
Matthew Pocci, 47, faces up to three years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 11. Jurors deliberated a little more than a day before finding the defendant guilty.
"I'm disappointed. Matthew's extremely disappointed and hurt," defense attorney Ashby Sorensen said after the verdict. "He felt like he was a victim that day and he feels like he's a victim again for simply trying to protect his family."
Pocci testified that he was "very nervous" while waiting for pedestrians to move out of the way near Second and Island as he left the Comic-Con convention with his girlfriend and others on July 26, 2014. The defendant said he started to worry when a crowd surrounded his car and people sat on the hood.
"It's clear that they were very scared there at the end," Sorensen told reporters. The attorney said Pocci who has no prior criminal record could get probation at the time of sentencing.
Deputy District Attorney Anthony Campagna told jurors the defendant stopped for several minutes on Second Avenue, and even turned his engine off for a few moments, before honking his horn "loudly, aggressively" and driving into the group of onlookers.
Jurors saw video footage from three different angles.
Campagna said the fact that Pocci is Deaf didn't play much of a role in the crime... Read More: http://10news.com/news/deaf-driver-found-guilty-in-zombie-walk-crash

Deaf Girl Uses ASL To Communicate With Pet Dog
VIDEO: Deaf News - Deaf Albuquerque girl uses American Sign Language to communicate with pet dog.
KRQE ALBUQUERQUE -- A Deaf New Mexico girl is using sign language to communicate with her pet dog. “She does everything with him,” said Neeva’s mom Chelsea Goff. While Neeva, 4, eats, her dog Baxter cleans up her crumbs. When it’s time to go outside and play, he is by her side.
“He is just always with her. If she’s asleep in bed, we can guarantee that he is in her room with her,” said Goff. Neeva and Baxter aren’t your average pair.
“We found out right away after she was born that she didn’t have hearing,” said Goff. Neeva goes to the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe. She communicates using sign language. “So really that is our primary language with her, therefore it’s her primary language with our animals,” said Goff.
Goff went to Animal Humane of New Mexico in August to find a dog that could fit in with her family, particularly one that had enough patience to care for Neeva.
“They had some animals that they thought would fit with our family and sure enough Baxter was one of them,” she said. “It was kind of that love at first sight kind of thing, so we brought him home and things have been great.”
Neeva has taught Baxter how to sit, stay and even go using sign language. Goff said Baxter listens most of the time especially if there is a treat involved.
“To watch them interact and really have active communication is really spectacular to watch,” said Goff. She also said the constant communication between the two has helped Neeva with her signing.
“In the Deaf community you get a sign name and it is usually assigned to you by another Deaf community member, so Neeva gave Baxter his sign name,” she said. Goff said the pair’s relationship is a silent one, yet powerful. Neeva’s family got Baxter for free from Animal Humane after another family who fell in love with him at the shelter, but couldn’t have him paid for his adoption fee. Source

Deaf Christian Woman Gang Raped By Muslims
VIDEO [CC] - Deaf News: Deaf christian woman gang raped by Muslims in Pakistan.
KASUR, PAKISTAN - Three Muslim men broke into the home of a Deaf christian woman in a village in the district of Kasur, Pakistan, and took turns raping her while the men of the family were at work. The incident occurred in the Ganda Singh Wala village in the Kasur district of Punjab, according to the Pakistan Christian Post.
The woman reportedly screamed for mercy while being raped, but no one came to her assistance. Relatives of the woman have retained the services of christian lawyer Sardar Mushtaq Gill, who runs an advocacy group offering free legal assistance to Pakistani Christians and other minorities who are victims of abuse and religious persecution.
The lawyer filed the first information report with the police and is trying to reconstruct the facts of the attack, though he admits that it is not easy to get a case like this prosecuted fairly in Pakistan. One suspect, Muhammad Umar, has been arrested while the other two attackers reportedly escaped, and Gill is not optimistic about seeing justice done.
“It’s very difficult to get a punishment for those responsible,” he told the Fides news agency. “Often in these cases the police take no action or, worse, side with the rapists.”
Gill also noted that cases of violence against christians and other religious minorities are far more frequent than is commonly known because of a system that turns a blind eye to religious persecution.
“Christian families or witnesses are pressured to withdraw complaints,” Gill added. “Violence against women and children of religious minorities, the weak and vulnerable, is widespread in Pakistan and is often carried out in silence. The cases and the stories do not come to light and when victims talk about it they are intimidated,” he said.
Islam is the official state religion in Pakistan, which has some of the most severe blasphemy laws in the world. Freedom of speech is greatly restricted and “defiling the Prophet Muhammad” carries a death sentence, while damaging the Qur’an is punishable by life imprisonment. “Insulting another’s religious feelings” can result in jail sentences up to ten years, but is applied only to those disparaging Islam... Still, she never lost her talent for sniffing out an adventure. When a storm blew open the back gate at her home in Collingwood, just north of Toronto, the old dog ventured off into the night.
But then in an unexpected and tragic turn, Merrick was run over three times by a police cruiser before she was finally shot dead.
Her crime? Police thought she was a coyote. In fact, she was a cattle dog. The disturbing Monday night encounter was captured on video.
This is not a humane method to euthanize an animal in any situation. It is reported that this animal did not move when nudged by the officers car before the officer decided to run it down three times before shooting it.
Karen Sutherland, the dog's owner, told reporters that Merrick suffers from dementia, and had slipped through a gate in her backyard during a storm.
"I'm a little bit in shock ... I didn't watch the video until Wednesday morning. It was enough to make me a lot more upset than I was last night," Sutherland told CityNews.
Christine Soti, a Collingwood resident who witnessed the incident, told the Globe and Mail that Merrick was still moving after being hit by the car a third time. "The eyes were opening and closing."
In the wake of Merrick's killing, police are facing tough questions about how officers deal with animal situations.
The Ontario Provincial Police did not immediately return a call to The Dodo, but Inspector John Trude told Postmedia Network that there had been complaints from two residents about a coyote on the loose.
"When the officer got there, it was growling," he said. "The actions of the dog caused the officer to believe it was still aggressive... Read More: https://thedodo.com/merrick-dog-shot-police-canada.html

Chinese Man Becomes Deaf After Using Super Glue Instead Of Ear Drops
VIDEO: Weird News - The 45-year-old said he was drowsy after waking in the middle of the night and grabbed the wrong bottle by mistake.
HANGZHOU, CHINA - An unfortunate man landed himself in a sticky situation when he mistook super glue for ear drops and had to endure a week of near-deafness.
Song Wan, 45, ran into a hospital's emergency department still in his pyjamas after he accidentally squirted an extra-strong adhesive, called 502 Glue, into his left ear.
He told the doctor how he was in the process of recovering from an ear infection and had wanted to use the drops to relieve an itch that was bothering him.
But he was drowsy after waking in the night and carelessly picked up the super glue before squeezing several drops of the powerful adhesive into his ear.
Realising his error, he then rushed to the First People’s Hospital of Hangzhou, in China’s Zhejiang province, where he was seen by Doctor Li Yong.
The medic, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, told him to simply wait a week.
Doctor Li explained that the mucous membrane in Song’s ear would secrete fluids to form a protective layer between the adhesive and his eardrum.
He said his eardrum would likely rupture if he peeled the glue off too soon. A week later, Song returned to the hospital and the substance was removed.
He told medics he had been a "nervous wreck" waiting to see whether he would regain the use of his ear, and praised the medical team for their advice. Source

'Chewbacca' Arrested At Polls On Election Day
VIDEO: Weird News - Star Wars Chewbacca campaigns for Darth Vader, gets handcuffed by police in Ukrainian election.
ODESSA, UKRAINE - Force Flops? The Force prevents Odessa mayoral candidate 'Darth Vader' from voting - Darth Vader along with his convoy of Storm Troopers and wookie Chewbacca showed up to vote in the mayoral elections in Odessa, Ukraine, Sunday.
Lord Vader complained about the detention of his supporter. He also said he failed to cast his own ballot as he was missing from the voter registry - despite the fact he has a Ukrainian passport, issued for Darth Alekseyevich Vader.
Ukrainians are casting ballots in a poll that is viewed by many as a confidence vote for the ruling coalition, which has lost much of its popularity following 20 months of economic hardships. Despite the somber mood, there were a number of strange incidents that took place around the country.
Police arrest voting 'Chewbacca' with Han Solo nowhere to be seen - The growling, hairy spaceship mechanic from Star Wars was fined an equivalent of $7.50 on Sunday, after breaking the country's election laws, as he attempted to canvass voters for Darth Vader, according to the Ukrainian publication Dumskaya.
A man dressed as Star Wars’ Chewbacca was arrested after refusing to show documentation to police, outside an Odessa polling station on Sunday.
The detention of the erstwhile companion of smuggler-turned-hero Han Solo, who appears to have turned to the Dark Side, happened in the port city of Odessa. Chewbacca drove Darth Vader to a polling station, but police arrested him for violating a law that forbids campaigning on election day. They were also dismayed when he failed to produce a valid ID, and resisted arrest.
In Kiev, a station where President Petro Poroshenko voted opened late because the chair of the election commission lost the key to a safe, which contained the ballot papers. The safe was cracked open with a rotating saw, which allowed the president and others to vote... Read More: https://.rt.com/news/ukraine-election-chewbacca-detained/

Deaf Arsonist Set Fire To Deaf Family's Home
VIDEO: Caught on camera: The shocking moment a drug-fuelled arsonist poured a gallon of petrol on to the house of a Deaf family sleeping inside before setting it on fire.
LONDON - A drug-fuelled arsonist has been sentenced to jail after he was caught red-handed on camera trying to set the home of a Deaf family on fire while they were sleeping inside.
Michael Douglas was paid £1,600 to target the victims by pouring petrol onto their house and then setting it alight in the early hours of the early morning.
The family's CCTV cameras caught Douglas, who is profoundly Deaf himself, and an unknown accomplice running up to the house in Bradford, West Yorkshire, emptying a gallon of fuel and setting it alight before making their escape.
The shocking moment a drug-fuelled arsonist poured a gallon of petrol on to the house of a Deaf family sleeping inside before setting it on fire.
Bradford Crown Court heard that the arsonist was drunk and high on cocaine and cannabis when he carried out the attack at 5am on May 26.
He has been jailed for five years and three months after pleading guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered as well as a variety of motoring offences.
Douglas told police he had been paid £1,600 to 'light the house' but had refused to kidnap the mother who lived there because the whole family was Deaf, the Telegraph & Argus reported.
After the 26-year-old father of four and his accomplice fled the scene, a neighbour called 999 and the victims were unharmed, although the ground floor of their house, their garage and the wheelie bins were damaged... Read more: HERE

Deaf and Hearing Worlds Unite - Shares Story
VIDEO [CC] Deaf and Hearing Worlds Unite: North Dakota couple shares story.
DES LACS, ND - KXNews - It's said that marriage is the ultimate partnership.
And perhaps no two people know that to be true as well as Darrell and Susan Francis.
Tonight the couple shared their experiences with Minot State University students and community members, as part of National Deaf Awareness Week.
Susan has been Deaf since birth; Darrell is Hearing. The Des Lacs couple told stories and took questions about their forty-two year marriage - what it was like to meet, date, get married, and raise three children in a hard-of-hearing environment.
(Off-Camera) "When you first started dating, was it kind of frustrating for both of you on both ends? Or was it pretty easy?"
(Darrell Francis, Des Lacs) "It was... quiet."
(signing for Susan Francis, Des Lacs) "Yeah, he didn't know what to do."
(Darrell Francis) "Don't tell them everything!" "Raising a family of three boys, all hearing - she did most of that on her own, because I was working. I held two jobs. She did a great job raising the kids."
Darrell and Susan have nine grandchildren and Darrell says they've started picking up bits of sign language, too. Source

Student Uses Hearing Loss To Motivate Others
VIDEO [CC] - A Scott County college student who was born Deaf is achieving things others thought were impossible.
WATE KNOXVILLE - After two surgeries that allowed her to hear and speak, for the first time she is hoping all of her accomplishments will show people hearing loss doesn’t have to hold anyone back.
WATE 6 On Your Side spoke with the student and her mom about the hearing implants that changed her life.
Before she had implant surgery, she tried to use hearing aids because if we could get benefit from that then would’ve been wonderful but unfortunately the hearing aids just didn’t work for her,” said Melissa Roberts Cheyenne’s Mother.
18-year-old Cheyenne Roberts received her first cochlear implant from Advance Bionics at just 15-months-old, and her second when she was 12. Afterwards, she had to learn how to hear and speak for the very first time.
“I was a cheerleader and I was able to hear everybody else cheer and hear what was going on at the game so cochlear implants just really helped me,” said Cheyenne Roberts... Read more: http://wate.com/2015/09/13/college-student-uses-hearing-loss-to-motivate-others/

Deaf Man Jailed Without Interpreter, Wins Case
Deaf News: Deaf man jailed without sign language translator wins case against District of Columbia jail.
WASHINGTON - A Deaf man who was jailed for 51 days without a sign language translator - left unable to communicate with prison doctors, his counselor, his teachers and other inmates - has won a discrimination case against the District of Columbia.
William Pierce is profoundly Deaf and communicates with sign language. After he pleaded guilty to a simple assault charge stemming from a domestic dispute, he was sentenced to the D.C. Correctional Treatment Facility, which is operated by Corrections Corporation of America.
The jail assumed that "lip-reading and exchanging written notes would suffice," and did not provide a translator, the court found.
"They figuratively shrugged and effectively sat on their hands," the court's decision read. Pierce felt isolated and confused by what was happening in jail, he said in court filings.
The court found that the District and CCA had violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.
“I am very pleased with Judge Jackson’s decision to find that the District of Columbia violated my rights as a Deaf man and a human being,” Pierce said, through an interpreter, in an American Civil Liberties Union press release.
“Video phones and interpreters are critical for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing inmates to have access to the same opportunities as other inmates," Pierce said. "Unfortunately, even with this decision, the denial of service and adequate access continues... Cochlear Controversy Dramatized In ‘Sound’
Deaf News: The world-premiere play “Sound” explores the controversy over cochlear implants for the Deaf.
SEATTLE TIMES - To hear? To speak? To sign? Those are the questions.
Deaf children in America are eligible for a procedure that can significantly expand their ability to hear. It is a cochlear implant, and rather than amplify sounds like hearing aids do, it works by directly stimulating the auditory nerve in the brain.
By 2012, about 96,000 adults and children in the U.S. alone had undergone the procedure.
Yet while many have hailed it as a breakthrough that not only can turn up the volume but also help Deaf children develop speech, not everyone is cheering.
“There are a lot of emotional feelings about CIs (cochlear implants) in the Deaf community,” explained Howie Seago, a Deaf Tacoma-bred theater artist and co-director of the new play “Sound,” which debuts this week at ACT Theatre.
“Many Deaf people feel that the doctors and other ‘professionals’ in the field of deafness consider us ‘defective’ and need to be fixed,” Seago commented by email.
“They stress this ad nauseam to the parents and do not fully educate them as to the range of communications options available. They almost always leave out the benefits of using sign language with their Deaf child.”
The conflict over whether children in particular need the device intrigued Seago’s co-director, Desdemona Chiang, when she read an early draft of hearing playwright Don Nguyen’s drama, “Sound.” It portrays the heated dispute between a Deaf father and his non-Deaf ex-wife over whether to try to restore their daughter’s hearing with CIs... Deaf EMT Better Than Some Hearing Staff
Deaf News: Deaf EMT 'better than some hearing staff' with Bethlehem ambulance company.
Lehighvalley Live - Chad Grabousky, Global Medical Transportation Services' first ever Deaf EMT, sits in the back of an ambulance last week at the company's Bethlehem headquarters.
Global Medical Transportation Services Ambulance Capt. Don Burslem didn’t know what to think when the person on the other line told him he was on the phone with a Deaf person.
How could he hire a Deaf emergency medical technician for the Bethlehem-based ambulance company? EMTs need to communicate with their patients, with their partners, with hospital officials over the radio.
But Burslem decided to take a chance on hiring Chad Grabousky, and more than two months later, he’s very glad he did.
“His patients love him, our staff loves him, and he actually does a wonderful job in back of the ambulance, better than some of my hearing staff,” Burslem said.
Grabousky, 22, is glad Burslem took a chance with him. He became a state-certified EMT almost four years ago but has struggled to find paid work. He lives more than an hour north of Bethlehem in Lackawanna County but had little luck finding work up there... Deaf Mice Cured With Gene Therapy
VIDEO: The end of cochlear implants? New gene therapy restores hearing in mice in the United States.
BOSTON - In a laboratory at Boston Children's Hospital a cure for genetic deafness is taking shape. Lead researcher Jeff Holt says that if all goes as planned, children of the future who lose their ability to hear due to genetic mutation will never go Deaf.
Holt and his fellow researchers are attacking the problem at its source. They are using engineered viruses to repair damaged genes that make up parts of the inner ear.
"Our strategy was to take a viral vector, remove the viral genes so that it doesn't make anyone sick and to replace those with the correct DNA sequence for TMC1," said Holt, an associate professor of Otolaryngology.
TMC1 is a gene critical to hearing. It is responsible for encoding proteins that convert sound into electrical signals the brain can process.
To test their treatment protocol, Holt and his team used two types of Deaf mice that model the dominant and recessive genetic mutations of TMC1 in humans. The team used an engineered virus called adeno-associated virus, or AAV1, to deliver the functioning TMC1 gene to the inner ears of the Deaf mice models...
