Deaf Arsonist Set Fire To Deaf Family's Home

VIDEO: Caught on camera: The shocking moment a drug-fuelled arsonist poured a gallon of petrol on to the house of a Deaf family sleeping inside before setting it on fire.

LONDON - A drug-fuelled arsonist has been sentenced to jail after he was caught red-handed on camera trying to set the home of a Deaf family on fire while they were sleeping inside.

Michael Douglas was paid £1,600 to target the victims by pouring petrol onto their house and then setting it alight in the early hours of the early morning.

The family's CCTV cameras caught Douglas, who is profoundly Deaf himself, and an unknown accomplice running up to the house in Bradford, West Yorkshire, emptying a gallon of fuel and setting it alight before making their escape.

The shocking moment a drug-fuelled arsonist poured a gallon of petrol on to the house of a Deaf family sleeping inside before setting it on fire.

Bradford Crown Court heard that the arsonist was drunk and high on cocaine and cannabis when he carried out the attack at 5am on May 26.

He has been jailed for five years and three months after pleading guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered as well as a variety of motoring offences.

Douglas told police he had been paid £1,600 to 'light the house' but had refused to kidnap the mother who lived there because the whole family was Deaf, the Telegraph & Argus reported.

After the 26-year-old father of four and his accomplice fled the scene, a neighbour called 999 and the victims were unharmed, although the ground floor of their house, their garage and the wheelie bins were damaged... Read more: HERE

BBC Smear Of Deaf Tory MP Goes Viral

VIDEO [CC] - BBC apologises after suggesting partially Deaf Tory MP had fallen asleep.

LONDON - The BBC has apologised after suggesting a partially Deaf Conservative MP was asleep during a debate on the trade union bill when he was in fact trying to listen to a speaker.

Pictures from BBC Parliament of Elmet & Rothwell MP Alec Shelbrooke began circulating on Twitter, prompting the BBC Newsbeat account to tweet on Tuesday morning that the image of the MP “resting his eyes is going viral”.

After the mistake was flagged, the original tweet was deleted and the BBC put out an apology from the account.

Shelbrooke describes himself as a trade unionist and spoke about the history of trade unionism during the debate. In subsequent images he can be seen opening his eyes while in the same position near the speaker.

Deaf & Blind Get Behind The Wheel

VIDEO [CC] - Motor-racing is not for the faint-hearted. But when you are Deaf and Blind, it takes on a different dimension.

LODZ - Motor-racing is not for the faint-hearted. But when you are Deaf and Blind, it takes on a different dimension.

All 19 drivers who took part in this unusual race on the tarmac of the Lodz Airport in central Poland earlier this month were hearing and visually impaired.

But like Helen Keller - the American author, activist and lecturer who was the first Deaf and Blind person to graduate from college - they are pushing the envelope of their disabilities.

Mateusz Kotnowski of Poland's Deaf and Blind Aid Society explained: “Of 19 participants, 12 had never driven a car before, while seven used to drive before they became disabled.

“Some are completely Deaf and Blind. Those who can still see or hear a little wear masks and helmets to ensure an equal playing field for all,” he said.

Each participant had to complete two timed laps of the circuit while under the watchful eye of a co-driver. First, though, they had two days of training to get a feel for the steering wheel.

Three driving schools volunteered a parking lot, five cars and a handful of instructors - who first had to work out a language based on touch to communicate with the drivers... Read more: http://iol.co.za/motoring/motorsport/these-racers-are-deaf-and-blind

Petition | Stop Moving Deaf To Mainstream Schools

Campaign: Stop moving Deaf children to Mainstream Schools, Keep and Open more Deaf Schools.

Petition by change.org - More Deaf Schools has been closed in last few decades which means more parents of Deaf children have very fewer choices. One or two limited choices available which forced the parents to make decision to move their children to Mainstream Schools.

It costs the Government MORE money to spend money on BSL CSWs or BSL interpreters and all extra unnecessary support for few Deaf pupils at Mainstream Schools.

It was said that many Deaf children losing their Deaf identities including found this is a big barrier to access to Deaf Culture and to Sign Language.

Many Deaf people become Qualified Teachers NOW!! More Deaf people are qualified in specialist subjects and they can teach at Deaf Schools.

"The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) promotes and safeguards the right of all Deaf people to quality education, starting at birth and throughout life. As for all learners, Deaf children have the same right to education and full access to quality education."

WFD then says "Full inclusion for a Deaf learner means a totally supportive, signing and student-centred environment. This permits the learner to develop to his/her full educational, social and emotional potential. This is stated also in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".

"Otherwise, inclusion as a simple placement in a regular school without meaningful interaction with classmates and professionals at all times is tantamount to exclusion of the Deaf learner from education and society. In such environments, the Deaf child is physically present but may be mentally and socially absent."

Deaf children should not experience mentally and socially absent, as they should easily access to high quality of education via Deaf teachers or Teachers who hold high level of sign language communication.

We are asking the Government to change the current policy of mainstream schools and adopt a language policy to ensure to protect Deaf Schools, and find ways to reopen more Deaf Schools.

See WFD recommendations of the Government to follow UN Convention on the Rights on the Persons with Disabilities http://wfdeaf.org/databank/policies/education-rights-for-deaf-children. Sign this petition - HERE
