This archived webinar introduces participants to the free equipment and services available to disabled Californians through the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program (DDTP),



• The California Telephone Access Program (CTAP), AKA California Phones, and

• The California Relay Service (CRS) with a focus on consumers with a speech disability.

Learn how you can assist your speech-disabled clients to receive free phones that accommodate their needs and how to use operator-assisted relay services that allow them to have conversations over the phone even if most other people have difficulties understanding their speech.



Love Miller is an Outreach Specialist for the California Telephone Access Program, specializing in consumers with speech difficulties. Love provides outreach and information for people with speech difficulties through presentations and informational booths. She earned her BSW from San Jose State University and her MPA from National University.

Deaf Federal Worker Arrested On Drug Charges

Deaf News: Federal government employee arrested on multiple drug charges.



LEONARDTOWN, MD - St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, Vice/Narcotics detectives conducted an investigation into a possible marijuana cultivation operation in the California area in the state of Maryland.



A search and seizure warrant was issued for the residence of Eric Douglas Jindra, 29 of Maryland and subsequently executed.



Detectives seized all items related to the grow operation, 11 marijuana plants in various states of cultivation (Valued at more than $11,000), 14 plants in the infancy stages of growth, 97 grams of product, a digital scale, two semi-automatic handguns, a AK 47 assault rifle and numerous rounds of ammunition.



Deaf suspect Jindra was arrested and charged and additional charges are pending a review with State’s Attorney Richard D. Fritz.



Detectives are currently working with investigators at Patuxent River Naval Air Station due to the Suspect’s employee status related to the Federal Government.

First Deaf Woman Swims Anacapa Channel

Deaf News: A swimmer from Colorado made local history being the first Deaf woman to complete the Anacapa Island Channel swim.

SANTA BARBARA - Micki Poole, a 50-year-old Deaf competitive swimmer from Greeley, Colorado completed the swim on September 12th in 7 hours, 2 minutes off the Santa Barbara coast. Poole became the first Deaf person to finish the 12.4 mile feat.



The channel is a challenge for all types of swimmers. The water is cold and choppy with strong currents, not to mention the predatory fish lingering about. Plus there are a host of rules making it even hard, one being the use of a wetsuit is prohibited.



"Typically five people attempt this swim every year, and half of them make it", said the president of the Santa Barbara Channel Swimming Association, Scott Zornig. Poole will be recognized for her accomplishment at the club's banquet in November.

Football League Hires First Deaf Head Coach

Deaf News: Football league hires first Deaf head coach in Riverside, Ca.

RIVERSIDE - The Press Enterprise - Marcus Chmaj is an expressive football coach. To get his point across, he gets close. He crouches. He grimaces. The boys, all 7 or 8 years old, stand attentive, watching his every move.



The boys watch him closely because they can’t hear him speak. That’s because Chmaj can neither speak nor hear. “I use a lot of body language and gesturing,” Chmaj says through a sign language interpreter. “They pick it up faster that way.”



Chmaj, pronounced “Sshmahj,” is the first Deaf head coach in the history of Riverside’s Orangecrest Junior All-American League.



The league first reached out to the Deaf community a few years ago, said league President Danny Cisneros, to “bridge the gap” between those who can hear and those who can’t.



Now team rosters include about a dozen deaf players, two of whom play on Chmaj’s team and one of whom is Chmaj’s son Donovan, 7.



Sometimes Chmaj, 35, communicates by writing in a notepad or typing into a note-taking app. Occasionally Aaron Chase Molina-Milbourne, 24, a Riverside City College sign language student, volunteers as translator.
